I expected something darker from this.
The Whistler has a strong concept. A grieving couple, a remote farm, and a cult that promises contact with the dead. That alone sounds like it could go really disturbing.
And sometimes, it works.
The atmosphere is heavy. The setting helps a lot — isolation, silence, that constant feeling that something is wrong. It leans into that slow, uneasy tension instead of cheap jump scares. But the problem is… it doesn’t always keep you engaged.
There are moments where it feels broken. The pacing is uneven, and the story doesn’t always flow naturally. Some scenes build tension, and then suddenly it drops.
The idea with grief and trying to reconnect with someone you lost is strong. That’s where the movie actually has depth. You understand why the characters make certain choices, even if they’re wrong.
But it never fully commits.
The cult, the rituals, the supernatural side — they’re there, but they don’t hit as hard as they should. It feels like the movie had potential to go much darker, but held back.
Critics also pointed this out , good atmosphere, but not enough to carry the whole film.
For me, it’s not a bad horror.
It’s just not as strong as it could have been.
