Slasher 2023 movie review featured image with 6/10 rating

Slasher (2023) begins like a familiar rural horror story: a masked legacy, an isolated town, and outsiders who wander into the wrong place at the wrong time.

But this film isn’t just about body count. It’s about inheritance, and the psychological weight of wearing a mask that isn’t truly yours. Julio inherits his father’s killer mask under his mother’s supervision. At first, he appears eager. He insists that killing is “easy,” almost treating it like a ritual task rather than something irreversible. But the moment he commits his first murder, that confidence cracks. The mask stops being symbolic. It becomes heavy. The film’s most interesting layer is the set of rules imposed by his mother. The mask comes with conditions. With boundaries. And once worn, it seems to restrict more than just behavior, it reshapes identity. When Julio realizes what those rules truly mean, his earlier bravado feels immature rather than sinister.

Complicating things further is love. Julio forms a connection with one of the girls, and suddenly the so-called “family tradition” doesn’t feel inevitable. The conflict between violence and emotion becomes the film’s strongest element.

However, the movie struggles with its supporting characters. The victims lack depth, making it difficult to feel tension when they’re in danger. Without emotional investment, the suspense softens. Some moments feel like waiting for the next scene rather than fearing it.

Tonally, the film occasionally wavers. The mythology behind the mask is compelling, but the execution isn’t always strong enough to elevate the concept fully.

The ending doesn’t resolve as much as it expands. Julio survives, and a late reveal, implying the existence of a sister, feels less like a planted twist and more like a deliberate setup for a sequel. It’s not shocking. It’s strategic. Still, Slasher (2023) deserves credit for trying to build identity around its killer. It’s not a generic masked rampage. It’s a story about pressure, legacy, and realizing too late that violence isn’t as simple as it first seemed.

Final Rating: 6/10

Interesting concept. Uneven execution. A slasher with personality, but not enough emotional impact to fully stand out.

This is my personal opinion after watching the film. If you experienced it differently or have another interpretation, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
