I went into The Monkey (2025) not expecting something groundbreaking, and that probably helped.
The concept is simple: a cursed object that brings death in unpredictable ways. It doesn’t try to be deep psychological horror. It doesn’t pretend to be ritual-heavy or symbolic. It knows what it is, dark, chaotic, slightly absurd, and it leans into that.
What worked for me was the tension around the object itself. Every time the monkey appeared, there was that feeling of “something bad is about to happen.” And even if the structure is repetitive, the unpredictability keeps it interesting.
It mixes horror with dark humor, which won’t work for everyone. Some moments feel exaggerated, almost playful. But I didn’t mind it. It gave the movie personality instead of making it just another cursed-object story.
But it’s entertaining. And most importantly, it doesn’t drag. It’s solid. Not amazing. Not forgettable.
