The First Omen (2024) review 8 out of 10 rating

I didn’t expect much from this one, especially because prequels usually disappoint. But The First Omen actually surprised me.

What worked for me was the atmosphere. From the beginning, there’s a heavy religious tone, and it doesn’t feel cheap. The setting, the music, the slow build, it all creates tension without needing constant jump scares.

A lot of critics praised the cinematography and the performance of the lead actress, and I agree. She carries the film. There’s something unsettling about her transformation, and it feels controlled, not exaggerated. It’s not non-stop horror. It takes its time. Some people say it’s slow or predictable, and I can understand that. But for me, the atmosphere made up for it. The disturbing imagery in the second half definitely pushed it further. It didn’t feel like a safe horror movie. It had moments that were uncomfortable in a good way. It’s not perfect. It doesn’t reach the emotional intensity of something like Hereditary. But it works. It respects the original Omen universe while still trying to stand on its own.

My Rating

8 / 10

Dark, atmospheric, and stronger than I expected from a prequel. This is just my opinion. If you felt differently, feel free to comment and share your take.
