I don’t even know if I should call this a horror movie. It’s not scary in a normal way. It’s uncomfortable. Heavy. Suffocating. From the first minutes, the house feels wrong. Too quiet. Too still. Like something is watching. The dinner scene? That wasn’t horror. That was emotional violence. The way they talk to each other feels more disturbing than any demon in the film. And Toni Collette… she didn’t act. She collapsed on screen. It felt raw. Ugly. Real. You can literally see grief turning into something darker. The car scene completely destroyed me. No music. No dramatic build-up. Just shock. Silence. And then the morning after. That’s when the movie really hits. What I respect about Hereditary is that it doesn’t try to entertain you. It doesn’t give you relief. It doesn’t care if you’re comfortable. But the last act is where people are divided. It starts like a family trauma story.
It ends in full cult horror. For me, it worked. It felt intentional. Like everything was decided long before the characters realized it. This isn’t a movie I would casually rewatch. It drains you.
But it stays in your head. My rating:
Atmosphere: 9/10
Emotional impact: 10/10
Fun factor: 3/10
Disturbing level: 10/10 This is just my opinion. If you’ve seen it and feel differently, feel free to comment and share your take.
